In The Dark

Are there birds that fly in the dark,
in the dark, in the dark
birds that fly in the dark?

Are there birds that fly in the rain,
in the rain, in the rain
birds that fly in the rain?

I can be selfish sometimes
sometimes, sometimes
I can be selfish sometimes.
But there's something I need to know
when I come back to Michigan
will we kiss again?
when I come back to Michigan
will we kiss again?

There are simple things
that I don't know
Some of them are
some are not about you

There are simple things
I need to know
Some of them are
some are not about you

Are there birds that fly in the dark?
Are there birds that fly in the rain?

If I come back to Michigan
If I come back to Michigan
If I come back to Michigan
will you let me kiss you again?

CHUCK: A couple of years ago when Mira and I were deciding to join forces and become a band, she was living in Michigan where she'd gone back to finish school and I was living in the Northeast. Needless to say, there were a few long drives back and forth for a few months, during one of which I entertained myself by coming up with rhymes with "Michigan." So that's where "kiss again" came from. Some of those drives were in the dark, in the rain, in blizzards...while this is one of the more playful tracks on the album, it's also a song about thriving in the midst of difficult circumstances. I wrote this in the tower of an old Victorian mansion in New Haven (now Chetstone Studios) where Mira and I lived for our first year as a band.
